Marathon GIS was founded as a way to mesh my professional skills with my extra-curricular passions--running, hiking, biking, skiing, and making maps. My background is in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a tool that I have used for years to create maps and perform geographic analyses in support of environmental and civic projects. My "fun" activities include road racing, trail running, mountain biking, hiking, backcountry skiing, and virtually anything else that utilizes this amazing Utah landscape that surrounds me. |

| People say that you shouldn't mix work and play, but I've done just that. Over the years I've created detailed topographic and layer-based maps for myself and friends in support of various backcountry excursions and road races. GIS offers tools to calculate route distance, generate elevation profiles, and create aesthetically pleasing displays, among other things. The utility of such tools is quite evident for backcountry route finding and navigation, but as an avid competitive runner, I also found GIS-based maps extremely useful in familiarizing myself with race courses, knowing where the turns and challenging hills are, and visualizing the course and developing race strategies.
I figured that if maps such as these were useful to myself, then they would also be useful to other runners and race directors. And thus a freelance business was born. The goal of Marathon GIS is to supply race directors and individual runners with accurate, informative, and visually pleasing race course maps at a reasonable price.
